A.I. and how to (not) think like you’r enemy?
July 10th, 2008Yeah. A.I. Something I’m genuinely concerned about. Then why do i open with a poster of the movie Alien Vs Hunter (NOT, I repeat, NOT an “Alien Vs Predator”-movie. seriously). And the guy to the right? the lovechild of a big daddy, ancient chinese and master chief with cheap parents, to boot? Nah. The Hunter…
Hard to tell from the misleading poster, innit?
In this fantastic Turkey of a movie, there is a Hunter. A character traversing space, hunting aliens, presumably on earth. He is the epithome of hunters, apparently… and these may be the reasons:
1: He spawns from nowhere, most of the time. In a random direction, and may or may not be equipped with a strange weapon.
2: He has a suit with a mask, de-humanizing him, making him easier to want to shoot in the face.
3: He is manly. Therefore, when shot upon, he will never use cover. Even if it is half a step to the left.
4: When a target goes into cover, even when he sees the target go into cover (In the movie there is a scene where you see from the hunters perspective that a redneck tries to hide… but you see him. Clearly), the hunter gives up on the target. He doesn’t even try to shoot the camo-net the redneck is hiding under.
5: He doesn’t care about reflexes. When someone shoots at him, he uses about 8 seconds to lift his gun and fire randomly in an aproximation of the attackers direction.
….i could go on and on about this, but this hunter reminds me of something.. A.I. in games!
For a long time, guards in FPS’s mostly, have been ignorant twats with nothing better to do than to stand around, waiting for you to shoot one of them. After that, they violently open fire from their position, OR start running towards you, full speed, no matter how big a gun you’re holding. ..those were the days.
Game developers have done great leaps in everything the last couple of years, except A.I. Small steps here and there, yes, but since Far Cry came out, I personally haven’t seen stuff that blows it out of the water.
Characters in GTA 4 get out of their cars if you point a gun to their heads. Far Cry enemies could flank you (while talking about it. Halo 3 enemies could throw shield grenades to shield their allys. F.E.A.R. enemies could cover eachother while changing positions. Army of 2 enemies changed their position to better cover if you used long time to flank them, and they noticed you…. but these are single exmaples from different games. Not one of them had it all.
Now imagine A.I. being put to use with the latest and greatest(tm) inventions in gaming.
A team of two enemies, one shooting a hole in the destructible wall you were covering behind, the other chucking a grenade through it. A character in a near-destroyed vehicle driving it towards you, and leaping out before the vehicle exploded. Enemies lifting dead bodies to use for cover, or pushing objects closer, as to have cover while making you an easier target. Enemies who are hurt, running away to HEAL THEMSELVES! Enemies with phrase-databanks instead of whole lines of dialogue, who combined orders, cusses and other things, to create unique dialogue during gameplay, based on how you perform. “It’s that guy with |the red shirt!| he’s coming |through the back door!| cover me while i |run around to blow his ass outta here!|”
See how i just wrote some samples that could be interchanged during conversation?
Games are wonderful things. They allow me and others to have loads of fun with doing things we may not think of as fun in the real world. The technological advances in graphics are awesome, but seriously, it’s not the most important thing anymore. Playability is in the drivers seat, but the drivers seat could have some benefits of getting polished the fuck up. Physics are getting there.
Sometimes a game is just a game, but some developers are crying out that they make art, experiences, or something so close to real life you can taste it. Prove it. Make the next NPC i meet cry when he see the dead babies i’m holding, and then reach for MY gun. When that day comes, i’ll do you all long time. A very long time.
This rant was less coherent than usual. I blame poor A.I.
Speider out.
